For it to be successful in sharpening photos one needs to duplicate the background layer and set the blend mode to ‘overlay’. In Filter>other> one can find the High Pass option which should be selected. By increasing the pixel radius one can achieve a better sharpening. Then, open the Color Picker and enter 0 in the Hue and Saturation fields and 50% in the Brightness field. Select OK and then paint the High Pass layer to remove non required sharpening. Then change Hue, Saturation and Brightness back to normal level and the job is done.
